June 18, 2004, Newsletter Issue #7: How Fine Should You Grind Your Coffee?

Tip of the Week

HOW FINE SHOULD YOU GRIND?

Choosing the right grind for your beans depends on how you are going to brew your coffee. Different methods call for a different coarseness or fineness of grind.

Here`s a guide to give you an idea of how to grind your coffee:

For a coffee press: coarse
Commercial drip brewer: medium
Cone filter drip vacuum pot: fine
Home espresso machine: very fine

If you use a blade grinder, adjust the fineness of the grind by grinding for a longer or shorter period of time.

For how long?

Coarse: approx 10 seconds
Medium: approx 15 seconds
Fine: approx 20-25 seconds
Very fine: approx 25-30 seconds
