July 30, 2004, Newsletter Issue #13: Trivia about coffee substitutes

Tip of the Week

COFFEE SUBSTITUTES ARE NOT A MODERN INVENTION

Ours isn`t the first generation to be concerned over its health. Nor the first to wonder whether too much coffee might be bad for us. In 1895 Charles Post first manufactured `Postum`, a grain-based substitute for coffee.

Here is one of the claims he made at that time, "Remember, you can recover from any ordinary disease by discontinuing coffee and poor food, and using Postum Food Coffee."

Yes, ad claims back then were just as outrageous as they are today! Luckily for us, there is a lot of evidence today that shows us drinking coffee is not bad for our health at all.
